I read an article that just boiled my blood this week and made me sick. It talked about girls in schools in Afghanistan (AFG) getting burnt with acid b/c they had chosen to go to school. Yes there are attacks on general school populations in America, like Columbine, but nothing like the specific gender attacks in AFG. When people tell me that we shouldn't be overseas and that the money could be better spent here, yada yada yada... I get internally upset, sometimes even angry. Why? Because ANY American, regardless of race, gender, religion, etc. can go to school. If they're discriminated against/told "no" for whatever reason, they can run to a lawyer or the UCLA to fight for them so that they can go back to school, and probably even get paid to go to school. What happens in AFG to girls that want to go to school and get hurt in the process? They run in fear for their lives and have to sit at home or in hiding wondering if trying to go to school is really worth it. Not only that, but they have to figure out how they're going to get married or be provided for the rest of their life with a disfigured face. Imagine if it was your daughter/sister... Tell me that protecting these girls isn't something worth fighting for and trying to protect!
Imagine always having your body covered like this and trying to function. If you'd like to replicate at home, wear a sheet around all day. Oh, and the only way that other women can recognize you is by who you're with. So if you don't have kids (which don't have to be covered), you could pass your best friend in Wal Mart and not know it.
This girl would be considered immodest in AFG b/c her she is showing her face.
I can only pray that this woman's face and soul heals.
